Billy Harper - Capra Black (1973)

"This great group of players are joined by a quintet of voices including Eugene McDaniels on a couple of tracks who sing behind the Jazz players in an uplifting spiritual mode that cries out with the new Soul Jazz freedom of the 70s. Texas-born saxophonist Billy Harper had played with many of the greats (Gil Evans, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones) before recording this first album as a leader in 1973. Influenced heavily by Coltrane, Harper was part of the “Black Consciousness” movement in Jazz, which fueled such artist-owned labels as Strata-East in New York, Tribe Records in Detroit, and Black Jazz in Chicago. This session for Strata-East features an all-star cast, including a special appearance by drummer Elvin Jones on the track “Sir Galahad.” One of the quintessential traits of this strain of Jazz, the vocal chorus, is featured prominently on two tracks, linking the music to its roots in gospel. The equally-important blues influence shines through clearly, as well; just check out the track “New Breed” for evidence of that. All in all, an impressive debut from Mr. Harper. Interesting bit of trivia: Harper’s next album release was BLACK SAINT, inaugurating the label of the same name, which is still active today."

"This is basically the George Benson quartet, with Smith and Cuber, but trombonist Bennie Green and percussionist Pucho were added on some tracks, giving them a bop flavor that delighted dedicated jazz fans and critics. Green worked with Gene Ammons and Charlie Ventura in the forties, and sporadically with Earl Hines between 1942 and 1953. Benson's quartet was modeled after Jack McDuff's--with baritone saxophonist Ronnie Cuber, organist Lonnie Smith, a powerhouse player who deserved more attention than he ever received, and Jimmy Lovelace or Marion Booker on drums. The sonorous tone of Cuber's baritone gives the quartet a richer, more dense texture than that obtained by McDuff, who used a tenor, but the overall sound is the same. At twenty-five, Ronnie Cuber was an alumnus of Marshall Brown's celebrated Newport Youth Band; he had spent the previous two years with Maynard Ferguson's very loud and brassy orchestra, which may account for his aggressive style, but Cuber's approach also emphasized rhythm, and that was precisely the ingredient called for by a "soul jazz" group of this kind."

"Monk, Duke & Me" is one of my all-time favorite Jazz recordings, and I also became an instant fan of the interesting trumpeter Lonnie Hillyer - in spite of the capable presence of Ted Curson here.

The Jam Factory - Sittin' In The Trap (1970)

The track "It's Your World" is a true Lost Underground Gem...with it's hints of Blood, Sweat, & Tears or Chicago Transit Authority. Also the rhythm section flavors early Sly & The Family Stone at times. The proliferation of Musical changes within this one track epitomizes what experimental Music was all about in the 70's. Did I mention that this track's lyrics are some of the most righteous, social, and DEEP that you will Ever find on vinyl...?!
I most definitely rate this group above B.S. & T. and Chicago (except C.T.A. & Chicago I). They were much tighter, and their individual talent was proven a short while later. Tracks #A5 and #B2 are fine examples of that tight groove. Additionally, track #A3 is as mellow as one can get for that time period & genre. This song has a vocal flavor reminiscent of a Larry Graham ballad.
I've seen/heard the Wolfgang's Vault live concert, but it's not for sale or download at this time. However I prefer this studio album anyway...by a LONG shot! - DJ Baltimore Boogie Man

At the dawn of the 1970s, the Columbia Records label was enjoying monumental commercial success from their signings of Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago Transit Authority, two North American bands that had integrated horn sections into a modern rock context. The widespread appeal and chart success of these groups led the label, and its partner label, Epic, to actively pursue other groups which were following a similar path, which led Epic to the horn infused rhythm and blues/funk sextet, Jam Factory. Based out of Syracuse, NY, Jam Factory formed in 1968 and established their reputation as a popular regional band over the next few years. They eventually opened concerts for many high profile national and international acts, picking up fans along the way, many of them fellow musicians.
Epic released Jam Factory's debut album, Sittin' In The Trap, in 1970 and the band took to the road for the next several years performing on the same bill as many of the greatest groups of the era. They became friends with members of The Allman Brothers Band and soon relocated to Macon, becoming active within the thriving Southern Rock scene then revolving around the Allmans and the other talented artists involved with the fledgling Capricorn label.
Other than Jam Factory's obscure Epic album, and a rare single featuring two non-album tracks, recordings of the band are virtually non-existent, which makes this live recording somewhat of a holy grail for fans. Recorded in 1971, when Jam Factory opened for Rita Coolidge and The Byrds at the Richmond Arena, this set not only captures the group near the peak of their powers, but also features most of the original material destined for a second album. With the exception of the set-closing "Mr. Slow," which they perform by request, Jam Factory's set consists entirely of material yet to be recorded.
The set kicks off with the funky rocker "You're The One," beginning with the core quartet establishing the groove and the horns easing in shortly thereafter. Stylistically, the closest comparison may be to the great west coast band, Sons Of Champlin, who were pursuing a very similar path as the Jam Factory takes here, both vocally and instrumentally. "The Ballad Of Maxine," a deep grooving vamp about an aging prostitute, follows. The centerpiece of the set is an epic modular piece, possibly titled "Bright Blue Trips On Sailing Ships." Recalling early Chicago, here Jam Factory ventures into more psychedelic territory, featuring compelling horn arrangements and a hot instrumental break. The rhythm section of Joe English and Kent DeFelice are particularly tight and propel the group through this lengthy composition and throughout the remainder of this set.
Joe English's powerful drumming kicks into the short celebratory number, "I'm You're Friend," featuring a southern-flavored vocal arrangement and swirling organ from Gene McCormic. This sounds right at home with the early stages of Southern Rock, sounding not unlike a precursor to Sea Level, the band formed by keyboardist Chuck Leavell several years later, of which Joe English eventually joined. "Doctor Freeze," which follows, returns to the funky rocking that kicked off the set and transitions into a dramatic speed-jam near the end.
An audience member requests "Mr. Slow" and the band obliges to close their set. The only non-original performed here, this song was featured as the closer to their Sittin' In The Trap album. Written by John Houston, a friend from the band's Syracuse days, the storytelling lyric builds into a hot jam that showcases the various factions in the band. It begins with bass and horns. The guitar and drums join in and slowly build up the momentum. Following the bridge, with its lyric of "take off for the moon," the group launches into a fiery jam, featuring propulsive drumming and blazing guitar runs. Eventually this high-powered jam shifts into a bluesy framework that fades into the ether as the tape stock ran out.
That flaw aside, this is an excellent example of Jam Factory in their prime, performing before an appreciative audience. The band would soon evolve into the Tall Dogs Orchestra of Macon, before the extraordinary drummer, Joe English, would be recruited by Paul McCartney to join Wings. With McCartney, English recorded several hit albums and toured extensively, before joining Sea Level and eventually pursuing a career under his own name.

Blue Six - Beautiful Tomorrow (2002)

In my mind this amazing recording was well ahead of its Time in 2002, and is just now becoming "acceptable" to the indiscriminate ear of The Masses. However the Discriminating Listener has (I'm certain) already exposed himself to the magic sound of Blue Six.

I recall informing a client for an office retirement party that I would include some "Naked Music" in the playlist, not realizing how ill-informed the general public was at the time (and even now) to this genre-busting publisher that I could not quite categorize properly. All I knew was that this was the best Music that I had heard since sliced bread, and it would blend perfectly in a "lounge-type atmosphere". Of course, Beauty is in the ear of the beholder, so if one disagrees then so be it...just as long as the dissent originates from the Listening Experience, and not from word-of-mouth or pre-conceived notions. This particular client was so brainwashed that she became hostile because she assumed that Naked Music involved lewd or vulgar lyrics that would offend her precious guests.
She was on the verge of removing me from the action. I had to impress upon her that fact that my Reputation was on the line at each and every gig, so I wasn't about to compromise it by introducing inferior music to new clientele.

As it turned out, the function was in a banquet room being shared by another host who was partitioned off. Quite a few of the guests from the other party stuck their heads inside of our function to see what was going on. They were attracted by the Music...which was of a higher caliber than what was being presented across the partition. Not only that, I was offered an opportunity to dj a New Year's Eve party by one of the other party's guests!

This anecdote serves to illustrate just how critical the Music aspect of a party can be...and just how valuable a resource top-shelf Music such as Blue Six really is. "Beautiful Tomorrow" sounds like what Nu or Neo Soul should REALLY sound like - SMOOTH and sultry with a groove for a beat. Add jazzy elements (including a Miles-influenced trumpet passage & a flute that "floats like a butterfly") with original arrangements and the result oozes with Uniqueness...

Rebecca B. It's a tribute to a former co-worker who succumbed to cervical cancer. She was a positive influence on me. The mix itself develops like a novel...with Introduction, Complication, Crisis, Climax, and Conclusion. I consider the Conclusion track (You Don't Know) an overlooked Gem that should have been a radio hit. The overall mood is often subdued and repetitive...yet varied and fresh enough to avoid stupor, with phat beats sprinkled throughout the mix. The last four trax are atypical, yet close out the mix in a thoughtful manner with just the right amount of Respect. I know that Rebecca "Likes" this...

Abbey Lincoln, a singer whose dramatic vocal command and tersely poetic songs made her a singular figure in jazz, died on Saturday in Manhattan. She was 80 and lived on the Upper West Side. Ms. Lincoln’s career encompassed outspoken civil rights advocacy in the 1960s and fearless introspection in more recent years, and for a time in the 1960s she acted in films with Sidney Poitier. She was married to Jazz icon Max Roach from 1962 to 1970. Her singing style was unique, a combined result of bold projection and expressive restraint. Because of her ability to inhabit the emotional dimensions of a song, she was often likened to Billie Holiday, her chief influence. Valerie Simpson's first album was overlooked by quite a few people, although it was well received by those who heard it. But in 1971, there was a lot of new Music on the horizon and even superior items were often lost in the shuffle. I recall purchasing this album after hearing the Tour-de-Force track "I Don't Need No Help" on a college radio station. I was flabbergasted!!

Miss Simpson (at the time) injected a Vibe into that song that made you want to jump for sheer joy! Beginning with an assured and vibrant a-cappella, Valerie inserts a gospel-like piano accompaniment that - together with her amazing voice - is guaranteed to work you up into a sanctified frenzy as she testifies about her inner feelings for her man. And just in case you think that she is crossing the line, Valerie includes some tracks that serve to Praise God, so that there's NO question about how her man fits into the Scheme Of Things...

Also included is the wistfully refreshing Vibe - "Love Woke Me Up This Morning". It will hit you like a soft summer morning with birds chirping and butterflies waving at you outside of an open window...much like Minnie Riperton's "Loving You" - but it's more of a gentle roller-coaster ride, and with no sound effects. I am aware that both (Sir) Walter Jackson and the Temptations have covered this song, however I believe that Valerie Simpson's version is the original Gem.

Any connoisseur of 60's soul instrumentals would be remiss in not acquiring the easily forgotten "Pata Pata" that was released as a 7"-45 rpm...or it's b-side - "Poquito Soul", both included on this recording. I would venture to say that these two items were at least equal - if not superior - to any other instrumental track featured on the urban charts in the 60's. Even most "Northern Soul" advocates have allowed this version of "Pata Pata" to slip through their fingers. I consider that track as having set the trend for what was to be later categorized as "Afrofunk"...in spite of the fact that its flavor was decidedly Latin-tinged. And the smooth and classy "Poquito Soul" compares favorably with the equaly rare version by One G Plus Three. The author of "Poquito Soul" - Charles Miller - was to later become an original member of War...and you can hear it in the flavor. The track "Don't Lay Your Funky Trip On Me" was a collaboration between "(Papa D.) Allen, Thomas Sylvester/Charles Miller/Harold Brown/Howard Scott/Lee Oskar/Lonnie Jordan/Morris Dickerson"...that's War, ladies and gentlemen. And who knows...you just might like some of the other tracks also.

(Certainly, however, you can hear the seeds of some of War's future ideas, particularly in the Latin R&B flavor and the flute parts of Charles Miller... A little more personality and originality come through on the tunes penned by Miller or producer Maurice Rodgers. By far the most solid indication of Miller's future direction in War is the 1970 single "Don't Lay Your Funky Trip on Me"/"I Ain't Got No Soul Today (What It Is, Y'All)," both because it has vocals and it most likely features the original lineup of War (most of whom get the songwriting credits for both numbers). In fact, those two slyly humorous tracks sound enough like War's early records that they could slot in on an early bona fide War album with little problem.

[But after grooving to los Senors' whacked-out acid jazz interpretations of toons like Psychotic Reaction and Sunshine Superman for many a moon, imagine my surprise when I learned that this relatively obscure outfit was in fact the precursor to those long-lived denizens of Los Angeles multi-racial funk and soul, War. You'll find little if any mention of Senor Soul in the history books pertaining to War-.-unsurprising when, decked out in ponchos and sombreros for the promo pix, the Senors' label, Double Shot, promoted the band with a pseudo-Chicano image that they would probably rather forget (though like the pidgin Spanish on their early records, in retrospect it's sorta charming). However, the sounds Senor Soul produced were anything but novelty: a hip synthesis of Latin-flavoured jazz and dead-on-the-one psychedelic funk.

What It Is, Y'All is the first ever Senor Soul retrospective and it leans heavily on the most floor-friendly numbers from their two albums - the aforementioned Play Funky Favourites and It's Your Thing. Whilst future War-rior Chuck Miller defiantly helmed the combo for the first record, by the time of It's Your Thing there didn't really appear to be a Senor Soul, seeing as the album is composed partly of outtakes from the first LP sessions, or recycled backing tracks from other Double Shot/Whiz releases. Not that that's a problem - the choice cuts are all represented here, including Hypnotizer, Make The Funk Jump and The Mouse, the latter two and half minutes of pounding, fatback groove issued as a now much sought-after single in July 1969.

However the kicker, historically speaking, is the last Senor Soul release - the writer credit for the cracking Don't Lay Your Funky Trip On Me is indeed none other than the nascent War, a couple of months from Spilling the Wine with Eric Burdon. When I ran into Lee Oskar a few years ago, he acted like he'd never heard of Senor Soul, but hey, his harmonica is plainly in evidence on both Funky Trip and the relaxed I Ain't Got No Soul Today (What It Is Y'All). These are all killer grooves that no War-monger should be without. Did I mention there's a couple of unissued sides from the vault too? I don't speak a word of Spanish, but I can tell you los Senors are mucho funky. And then some.]

Between 1967 and 1972 they scored a run of eight consecutive Top 20 albums in the USA, with both Surrealistic Pillow and Crown of Creation making the Top 10. Jefferson Airplane's fourth LP, Crown of Creation (released in September 1968), was a huge commercial success, peaking at 6 on the album chart.

Grace Slick's "Lather", which opens the album, is said to be about her affair with drummer Spencer Dryden. "Triad", a David Crosby piece, had been rejected by The Byrds because they deemed its subject matter (a ménage à trois) to be too "hot" to record. Slick's searing sex and drug anthem "Greasy Heart" had been released as a single in March 1968.
